10Mbps Broadband Service

Before knowing about the 10Mbps Broadband service, it is important to know a few things about broadband UK, its types and connection speeds. Broadband can be precisely defined as a fast internet connection. The primary difference between a broadband and dial-up connection is that while using dial-up you cannot use your telephone line unless you have an alternative number. However in the case of broadband you get a 24 hours online internet connection, you can browse the internet while talking on your land line telephone. The major advantage of using a broadband connection is that it is faster than a dial-up one. In a dial-up connection it may take ages to download a music or video file. Watching live broadcasts and playing online games may be a tedious job with dial-up connection. All these tasks can be easily performed when a broadband connection is used. For obtaining a broadband connection all you need is a dedicated telephone line and a computer or laptop along with a few connection cables and a modem. Installation of the service is done by running the CD provided by the service provider.

Types of Broadband Connections: – Broadband Service is divided into the following categories:

  • ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line): – This broadband service is obtained through your telephone line by using a special modem or router. The telephone sockets are fitted with small devices known as microfilters that prevent the ADSL signal from interfering with the voice calls.

  • Cable: - For using this service you need to live in an area that is served by cable operator. You need to check this out with your local UK ISP. This internet connection requires a special kind of modem that is connected to the cable. Generally cable companies offer combined packages that include a cable TV and a telephone line along with the cable broadband service.

  • Wireless Broadband: – This broadband service is provided by installing a small antenna that resembles a TV aerial outside your house. This aerial antenna sends signals to a connection point inside the house which connects to the computer to provide you with internet connectivity. This is generally provided in remote areas where it is not possible to have ADSL or cable connection.

  • Satellite Connection: – This connection is the last option for people living in remote rural areas who cannot be provided with any other type of broadband internet connection. There is a one-way type of satellite broadband connection in which the satellite dish is used to receive data, however you need to use dial-up internet connection for sending data e.g. sending emails. The other type of satellite connection is the two way connection wherein the satellite dish is used to send and receive data.

  • SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line): – This service is similar to the ADSL connection. The only difference is that is an ADSL connection, the upload speed is less than the download speed; while in a SDSL connection the upload and download speeds are same.

Now that you are aware of the types of internet connections, the next thing to be considered is the speed at which broadband services are available as this is the primary reason why anyone would switch from a dial-up service to a broadband one. Right now the broadband services available is 1Mbps or 2Mbps. However recently many companies are trying to offer broadband services at a much higher speed of 10Mbps. Ideally a 1Mbps speed is considered to be very fast as compared to a dial-up speed (which is around 60kbps). Thus the 10Mbps speed will leave you with a lot of free time to do other important work. In today’s competitive world each second is precious. Deals can be negotiated or promises fulfilled during the extra time obtained. This is important when millions are at stake. Also in case, you are on a shared network with a single connection then a higher speed is better. This is because the connection is distributed through a router which may result in decreased speeds for individuals connected on the same router.

Thus a 10Mbps speed is advantageous and beneficial is many ways. There are many companies offering broadband service at 10Mbps speed, such as Earthlink, Virgin Media, NTL to name a few. Thus you can contact your nearest internet service providers to check out the latest broadband deals. Please do remember to check if you can get 10Mbps connection speed for the same price that you pay for 1 or 2Mbps. In fact Virgin Media is planning to upgrade the customers who are at 2Mbps speed with 10Mbps speed. They are also offering many plans specifically designed for this purpose. So you can just check out with your service provider to see what they can offer you. Technology has developed leaps and bounds and is now planning to offer a superior connection speed of 50Mbps; however this would be rolling out only by the end of 2009.
