The City of London launches 180Mbps capable free WiFi Network

Tuesday, October 17th 2017

The City of London has announced that their free WiFi network has gone live finally over the 'Square Mile' area. The public WiFi capable of ultrafast gigabit speed will be operated under a fifteen year contract by Cornerstone Telecommunications Infrastructure and O2.

This new network is an upgrade over the old platform run by The Cloud of Sky Broadband. JB Riney & Co Ltd and UK Power Networks built the multi-million pound network in about 28 weeks and apparently includes more than 150 access points, with many Small Cell units installed on street furniture. Local businesses and residents but only expect a realistic speed range from 30 to 180 Mbps, which could drop during peak times, because of the traffic to be shared, despite claims of gigabit performance. Access for users is via a one-time registration to the free network. The service will not be choked with advertisements, unlike some other deployments have done to help fund such a free hotspot service.

City of London Corp's Policy Chairman, Catherine McGuinness, said she is delighted to launch a real game changer for London City and believes that their digital services will match the fast-paced needs of the workers here. The Technical Programme Manager of CTIL, James Olejnik, remarked that they were proud to support the City of London in its requirements and this service is robust, secure and gimmicks-free for the end users, a great improvement over the previous service.
