Satellite Solutions Worldwide buys Quickline, UK's fixed wireless provider

Satellite Solutions Worldwide (SSW) has made an interesting acquisition of Quickline, the rural fixed wireless broadband provider. SSW owns Europasat, the UK and pan-European satellite ISP. SSW will pay £5 million as an initial consideration and a further investment of £2 million to grow the company.

Quickline has a increasing number of wireless broadband networks coming up around parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, and also the Pennines of England, that are capable of 50Mbps speeds. A few months earlier, the provider acquired for an undisclosed amount, a part of AB Internet, a rival rural wireless service provider.

By acquiring Quickline, SSW will gain extra mileage to help diversify their business. As both the technologies are mostly used to connect remote rural areas in the UK, they can be combined to provide satellite capacity for terrestrial distribution of fixed wireless services. However, the meagre data allowances offered, hampered by slow latency times, is a disadvantage for satellite-based links.

CEO of SSW, Andrew Walwyn, said the growing appetite for connectivity also saw continued demand for last-mile broadband solutions. He pointed out that as the leading satellite broadband provider in the country, their acquisition will not only further diversify their revenue base, but also widen the offering of last-mile broadband solutions.
