Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) which has been involved in LTE (long term evolution) is reported to have moved closer to launching a new, more advanced mobile broadband technology that can offer up to 173Mbps downstream speed, the latest report from Zdnet says.
Currently, the WiMax technology is capable of 70Mbps speed while the HSDPA mobile broadband technology offers up to 7.2Mbps speed. Both mobile WiMax and LTE will combine together to form so called 4G mobile technology.
On Wednesday, Nokia Siemens Network informed that it has completed the trial of LTE in Berlin and used 20MHz of bandwidth in the 2.6GHz spectrum. It should be noted that Ofcom proposed the auction of this spectrum band for various mobile operators in UK recently. Ofcom announced the last date for receipt of applications from mobile operators will be January, 16.
Stephan Scholz, the Chief technology officer of NSN said that LTE would go ahead with the target of five billion users within next six years as this can be achieved with the efficient use of spectrum.
The Head of LTE at NSN explained the future plans of LTE:
We can demonstrate that LTE meets the high expectations set for this new technology. Most importantly, we now have evidence that future LTE networks can run on existing base station sites and mobile operators can build LTE networks without requiring new antenna sites."
As far as UK is concerned, Mobile WiMax is gaining momentum after the launch of services in Milton Keynes by FREEDOM4. With the auction of the spectrum band, more mobile operators are expected to roll out new services in UK mobile broadband industry.
