London borough of Bexely looking for provider for free public WiFi

Tuesday, November 21st 2017

The London Borough of Bexley is seeking a provider to partner the roll-out of free public Wi-Fi, as part of a drive to enable the area with world-class digital infrastructure. The borough council is offering the use of its street furniture in return for helping it install the public Wi-Fi network. The council seeking a potential supplier for its scheme of free public, has issued a contract notice for the same.

The provider has to roll out the system for the free public wireless internet access, across the key commercial centres of Brexley. The borough wishes to better the "cellular wireless infrastructure" that is viable commercially, as widely as possible and also get a supplier that can deliver a wholesale network, usable by other wireless service providers also.

The chosen provider will be given the benefit of using both street furniture/property assets of the council, present in the proposed area. The chosen firm will also have to improve the choices for the borough's residents and businesses by encouraging providers of fixed wireless access.

As per the contract notice, the council will invest as much as £2 million for the scheme and is seeking a partner who can work for 15 years. Potential bidders can register their interest up to the 28th December. Bexley wants to have a world-class infrastructure placed to drive economic development, to enhance delivery of public services and for social inclusion.

After Worcester City Council published a similar contract notice, Bexley is the second local authority to look for a commercial partner to set up its public Wi-Fi service, in return for use of street furniture. Worcester, earlier this month, was seeking a provider to install, at their own expense, wireless access points with footfall monitoring software in the city.
