Vodafone launches project to boost indoor mobile coverage in rural communities.

Vodafone, one of UK's major mobile operators, has launched its Community Indoor Sure Signal project to cover some 100 rural communities on fixed line broadband connections. It will be delivered via 3G mobile coverage, where signal quality is weak or non-existent in community hubs, like the village hall or pubs.

The solution seems to have come off the existing Rural Open Sure Signal (ROSS) scheme on Femtocell technology that Vdafone presently uses to expand 3G network reach across nearly 100 remote rural communities. However, the ROSS scheme does struggle to reach indoors and that's why the operator has launched this new scheme.

The Community Indoor Sure Signal (CISS) scheme will use one of the operators Femtocell-based Sure Signal devices to connect a community hub. The device will be plugged into the fixed line router and the signal will be relayed by the broadband service to reach around the premises via a 3G mobile signal. This method has already been available through Vodafone for years. A successful pilot has been conducted in Bransford, near to Worcester, at The Bear and Ragged Staff pub. The operator is calling for interested rural communities with poor mobile signal reception to apply. After the 1st September this year, the applications will be considered, so as to select the fist communities during the autumn of this year.

However, the operator has one condition that successful applicants have to meet. They need to provide an unlimited fixed line connection, capable of 4Mbps at least, with 2Mbps upload speed. Thus, the Indoor Sure Signal device can provide 3G signals up to 50 metres on the 2100MHz band. But only Vodafone customers will be availing this service.
