Virgin Media’s Student Package

Wednesday, August 1st 2012

Virgin Media, one of the largest Internet providers in the UK has come up with a broadband package for students. It is the first provider to unveil a broadband package before Autumn for students. Usually Virgin Media’s broadband contracts are for a period of 12 months or 18 months but this student package is for 9 months to match the duration of the academic year.

The student package is priced at £22.50 per month without a phone line. The broadband speed available is up to 30 Mbps. Virgin Media Super Hub wireless routers will be provided and the package offers broadband with no download limits.

While all current broadband deals of Virgin Media offers free installation, the Student package requires payment of £49.95 for installation. Instead of the usual TiVo digital TV recorder now Virgin Media offers a free V HD set-top box for TV packages.

Though the student package is for a period of 9 months, the customers who want to discontinue the service are required to inform the company 30 days before their discontinuing the service otherwise the customer has to pay for the full month.

The CEO of Ofcom, Paul France said that Virgin Media is the first company to launch a student package this year and the package would be beneficial to students who live alone or not. In the same breadth he added that the 30 days notice for cancellation of the contract would cause difficulty for the students as most of them would be unaware of that condition. Hence he appealed to consumers to read the small print in the contract before committing themselves.
