Virgin Media’s claim of broadband speed under observation
‘BT Broadband’ has challenged the claim in the court that Virgin Media is misleading the public.
Matt Wilson of the ‘Advertising Standards Authority’ (ASA) remarked that any service provider, if found misleading the public, will be taken to task. If it violates the advertising code, it will be forced to withdraw the advertisement and it can not show it again.
ASA will soon deliver its findings.
A spokesperson of Virgin Media confirmed that Virgin Media’s claim can be justified. It is providing speed of 100 Mbps in various places, which will be soon upgraded to 120 Mbps. It is almost 13 times more than the UK’s current average speed. Even Ofcom has accepted it. The company delivers what it promises.
Virgin Media had run into trouble earlier as well.
Three years back ‘B Sky B’ contested Virgin Media’s claim that 10 out of 10 homes can avail a speed of 20 Mb with its fiber optic broadband. B Sky B challenged that the advertisement cannot hold water because technically it is impossible to grant 20 Mb to all customers simultaneously with the existing network.
That is not all. Last year Virgin Media had advertised that Ofcom had certified that the company’s broadband is twice as fast as that of BT. BT challenged this.
