Virgin Media trials new Technology to fight Online Piracy
Virgin Media, the prominent cable broadband provider operating in the United Kingdom has announced its trialling a fresh technology that would help the broadband supplier in its struggle against internet piracy. The newly developed anti-illegal filesharing concept, which has been dubbed as deep packet inspection technology by the developer Detica, is being used by Virgin Media to identify the kind of files shared by the customers. The new system is expected to give a comprehensive report on how much content has been shared illegally through its broadband internet network. The news has been reported by the Times. Nevertheless, it is not believed that technology of deep packet inspection would allow the internet service provider to identify the details of specific downloaders. According to a Virgin Media spokesperson, this could happen although the deep packet inspection technology was not developed for that particular purpose. He added that despite the discarding of the IP details, the technology allowed them to identify the exact characteristics of illegal traffic on their network. Virgin Media that is currently working on the platform with Universal Music, had only last year unveiled its plans to launch a fresh digital music service, which packed an option for unlimited download subscription.
