One of the leading telecommunications providers operating in the United Kingdom and the leading cable broadband operator in the country, Virgin Media has started the new year on a successful note by carrying over its broadband provider status of 2010 to 2011.

To be preciser, the prominent cable broadband provider has maintained its position at the top in the first major broadband download speed test carried out by Cable UK, one of the popular broadband comparison websites based in the United Kingdom.

The price comparison website had participated 816 people in its broadband download speed research. Virgin Media came in first place with a score of over 7.8 Mbps for typical broadband download speeds. It is noteworthy that this figure is considerably greater than the 4.4Mbps average speed experienced in the country.

The second place in the broadband speed test was secured by Be Broadband, a subsidiary of O2 UK by clocking an average speed of 5.8 Mbps. Other internet service providers that followed these two in the list were BT, Sky and Orange UK with speeds of 4.5, 3.6 and 3.3Mbps respectively.
