Digital spy reports that Virgin Media is to increase the speed of its size L package in specific areas from 4 Mbps to 10 Mbps. Though the upgrade is for just a trial period of a few months, the 13,000 Virgin customers who live in the Preston, Blackpool and Wigan will be able to experience high speed broadband without additional cost.

With the increase in downstream, the upload speed will also get boosted during this trial service. Thus, the upload speed will be increased to 512 Kbps from 384 Kbps.

Ernie Cormier of Virgin Media commented:

"We already have a premium broadband service offering download speeds of up to 20Mbps, but we’ll use this trial to listen to feedback from customers experiencing a significant speed increase on our middle tier of service. We want to ensure all of our broadband customers continue to get the best possible experience."

Virgin has also planned to offer high speed broadband service with downstream speed up to 50 Mbps and has been testing it in selected areas in the UK.
