Virgin Media plans to offer more than double the broadband speeds of its customers
Virgin Media intends to double the current internet speed available to its 4.1 million customers. The company has set aside GBP 100 million for the purpose. The broadband service provider has the following plans for the next 18 months, by which, 74% of the customers who subscribe for up to 10 Mb service will get a speed of 20 Mb. 12% of the customers who subscribe for up to 20 Mb service will get a speed of 60 Mb. 9% of the customers who subscribe for up to 30 Mb service will also get 60 Mb speed. 5% of the customers who subscribe for up to 50 Mb to 100 Mb will get 100 to 120 Mb. 120 Mb will be the fastest in the UK. It will enable downloading of a High Definition movie in just five minutes. Neil Berkett of Virgin Media stated that a fast and reliable broadband is no more a luxury. In fact, it is inevitable, with most of the people on ‘online’ most of the time. The internet is providing ample facilities and more devices can be connected to it. It is the duty of the service provider to help the customers with the best service, like granting a super-fast connection. David Cameron, the Prime Minister complimented Virgin Media for its initiative, which will help in the boost of the country’s economy. Jeremy Hunt, the Cultural Secretary said that Virgin Media is helping the government to achieve its objective of providing super fast broadband to 90% of the UK population by 2015. Apart from Virgin Media, BT, another service provider, is also investing about GBP 2.5 billion to install fibre optic broadband to meet the needs of 66% of the UK population by the same date. BT expects that some of the areas in the country may even get 300 Mbps once its project is commissioned.
