Virgin Media plans Public WiFi Network

Tuesday, November 23rd 2010

The prominent cable and fibre optic broadband provider operating in the United Kingdom, Virgin Media has been reported to be actively exploring plans to take advantage of its cable broadband network for creating tens of thousands of WiFi access points across the United Kingdom.

It is apparent that Virgin Media was considering copying the exploits of Cablevision in the United States of America. Cablevision has rolled out public wireless broadband access across New York. Alongwith TimeWarner, the US WiFi provider had initiated a $300 million project that provides WiFi hotspots to thousands in areas where mobile firms were struggling in keeping up with demand for 3G broadband access.

Today's mobile broadband sector is apparently tumultuous from the cramping of the bandwidth resulting from an astonishing boom in devices that are data-hungry such as the iPhone and iPad of Apple. This constriction of network has obviously left the operators struggling to keep pace with the users' desire for enjoying constant access to YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

The dirtector for advanced technology at Virgin Media, Kevin Baughan said that public WiFi could be a viable solution for the problem. He added that they have been inspired by the achievements of Cablevision in New York and were actively exploring the chances of effectuating a similar network in the United Kingdom.

Baughan also said that wireless broadband networks were potential of taking the sheer power of the superfast cable broadband internet network and putting it at locations where people wanted it most.
