Virgin Media launches 50Mb/s broadband package

Friday, November 14th 2008

Virgin Media has planned to launch their new broadband package that promises a speed of 50Mb/s. They have attracted 200 customers in Warrington in Cheshire to be the foremost to try this new package for two months and that too at no additional cost.

The cable firm has improved its network to maintain the DOCSIS3 standard. The new "XXL" package will be slowly added to the firm's 2Mb/s ("M"), 10Mb/s ("L") and 20Mb/s ("XL") offerings across its whole cable network, finishing by the mid of 2009.

Warrington has been chosen by Virgin Media for the test because of a high percentage of subscribers in that area and to its faster existing services. Another reason for making this choice is that one of the national cable network's three "head-end" nodes is down the road from Warrington at Knowsley and the North West served as the experiment room for their latest produce under Telewest, a prototype that has been persistent ever since it amalgamated with NTL to form Virgin Media in 2006.

Subscribers who are willing to accept the invitation by November 18 will be given a new modem "in a few weeks time". In exchange for the free upgrade, all they will have to do is fill out some questionnaires. However, the information of pricing of this XXL package still remains under the wraps.
