Virgin Media Head says Broadband Ads are Shoddy

Thursday, July 29th 2010

The chief executive officer at Virgin Media, the cable broadband giant operating in the United Kingdom, Neil Berkett said that the adverts of the rival broadband providers were grossly misleading in the way they marketed broadband speeds to the users.

As a matter of fact, Berkett insisted that the government of the United Kingdom needed to crack down on such marketing claims, if it wanted the firm to invest in broadband networks of high speed nature.

Berkett called on the UK government to have a crackdown on erring ISPs in the light of a report from Ofcom on the difference between actual and advertised broadband internet speeds in the United Kingdom.

The statement from Ofcom, the telecommunications regulator of the United Kingdom, was regarded by Berkett as a good statement but going only halfway. He asked where the incentive was for operators like Virgin Media who invested hundreds of millions in broadband still could not say how better they were.

Meanwhile, Ofcom had put together a code of conduct for broadband providers operating in the United Kingdom that did not cover advertising, and the Virgin Media chief wanted a crackdown on marketing claims with the government's support to ensure that rules were toughened.
