Virgin Media acquires rival network operator Smallworld Fibre

Wednesday, February 5th 2014

Virgin Media, the national cable operator, has announced the taking over of a smaller fibre-optic network operator- Smallworld Fibre. By this acquisition of the Lancaster-based rival's 40,000 homes in areas of western Scotland and north east England, thousands of households will hook up to the Virgin Media network. Customers in areas of Morecambe, Lancaster, Irvine, Dreghorn, Troon and Kilmarnock, as well as Carlisle, will be benefited. This takeover now leaves Wight Cable, based in the Isle of Wight, as the last independent cable provider in UK.

Smallworld Fibre's customers need not expect any change for now on their services, but Virgin Media would be contacting them, their new customers, with further details in due time. As of now, as both services run on the same technology they will continue as two, but will be slowly integrated and some of the Virgin Media broadband solutions would be offered to the new customers.

Smallworld's owner and MD, David Durnford, recognises the strength of Virgin Media and the next generation service in TV offered. By passing the successful Smallworld over to Virgin, their customers would be benefited and can keep pace with the changing digital world, he added.

Chief Technology and Networks Officer, Paul Buttery, at Virgin Media said, that by acquiring Smallworld, Virgin will be able to bring their advanced services to thousands of new customers, in their efforts to grow, expand and invest in right opportunities.
