Authorities interested in Virgin Media

It has been reported that the trial of the internet traffic monitoring technology of the cable broadband giant of the United Kingdom, Virgin Media was attracting the interest of the European Commission, which was all set to keep an eye on the proceedings.

As a matter of fact, Virgin Media, the leading cable broadband provider of the United Kingdom that is also engaged in the rollout of next generation fibre optic broadband service across the country alongside BT, has organised a trial of the internet usage monitoring technology.

The European Commission, the body for making regulation has revealed to ZDNet UK that it intended to monitor the working modes of the technology to ensure that it complied with the official rules, although it had not contacted Virgin Media on that.

ZDNet further reported that Virgin Media was planning to engage the fresh technology with a view to estimate roughly how many web users were using facilities meant for illegal filesharing.

Meanwhile, the regulatory body outlined the commitment of the commission towards the protection of security as well as privacy of electronic communications. It added that this was one of its priorities, and therefore it intended to monitor the case closely.

It is worth noting that the news of Virgin Media trialling the new technology comes after the provider of the fastest broadband package in the UK had announced its new music streaming and download service.
