ASA terms Virgin Media broadband speed campaign as misleading

Thursday, June 30th 2011

Stop the Broadband Con campaign of Virgin media has been criticised by Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The campaign has required the broadband providers to change the way their advertised the broadband speeds. However, Virgin media has failed to consider its own broadband speed ads and its “traffic management” to slow down connection at peak hours. This has compelled ASA to rap over Virgin Media’s campaign. BT Retail along with Sky have filed the complaint against Virgin media. Virgin media’s claim to offer 90% of advertised speeds was not true, said BT retail’s Consumer managing director John Petter. He said that ASA has charged Virgin media on six accounts. Virgin media’s actions are very embarrassing as it failed to prove its claims on five counts and it has brought disgrace to other companies. As a response, Virgin media said that it was just promoting debates on how broadband speeds are advertised.
