200Mbps Broadband Trials started by Virgin Media

Thursday, May 7th 2009

Reports reveal that Virgin Media has started experimenting on a 200Mbps broadband concept, which when materialised would be first applied amidst a small user group in the United Kingdom. It is believed that around hundred lead adopters in Kent would be given access to the speeds of up to 200Mbps, at the culmination of the UK ISP's laboratory trials. It is also believed that once realised this service would be among the fastest broadband speeds in the world.

200 Mbps Broadband Service Virgin Media's laboratory tests on the context are expected to last for six months before the analysis of the results. The high speeds will also be used by the company in the testing of application such as 3DTV and high definition 1080p TV. Apart from these, a range of upstream speeds will also be tested here. However, to use such high speeds the consumer is required to engage high-end computers with gigabit Ethernet ports, which can conceive such high speeds.

Docsis 3 is the technology that enables Virgin Media to achieve such high broadband speeds. This is a technology that acts by bringing out the optimum from fibre-to-cabinet services of the ISP. This also states that hard wired connections would be needed to cope with broadband services of this kind of speeds, since mobile broadband or any other wireless networks are able to tame the speeds of 200Mbps at present.

Neil Berkett, the chief executive of Virgin Media stated that the company were in at the forefront of understanding and innovation when it came to superfast broadband service offers, and the 200Mbps trials would give them further insight into the problems of consumers using true wideband services.
