UK Communications Minister Stephen Carter to Step Down from the Government
Stephen Carter who had been a part of the UK government for eighteen months as the minister for Communications, Broadcasting and Technology may resign the post, according to reports. The resignation is widely presumed to follow the presentation of the final Digital Britain report on Tuesday. Carter who was recruited by Gordon Brown, according to a Time's report, would return to the private sector. Rumours are also around that the 45 year old graduate of Aberdeen University has been offered the chief executive post of ITV, although this news is highly obscure. However, his abrupt stepping down from the post would obviously invite increased speculation regarding his running for the chief executive post of ITV, which is an alternative entity for the BBC. Carter has served as the chief executive of Ofcom until mid 2006 from its establishment in 2003. He had started his career as graduate trainee at J Walter Thompson ad agency in 1986. Later he became the agency's UK and Ireland operations chief executive. In January 2008, before joining the government, he had become a No 10 strategy advisor.
Carter, who did not dismiss the reports that he was contemplating over leaving the government, although negated the suggestions that another job had already been lined up. In the wake of the reports, he said to the Times that he was feverishly working on his final Digital Britain report, which was his sole preoccupation presently.
