Tiscali which has its own broadband TV service released its independent research report (TV Trends report 2007) on IPTV viewer-ship in UK. The report says that majority of UK adults (63 %) opt to watch TV contents using their broadband connection. The main reason of its huge popularity is that it offers various choices and flexibility to viewers. Nearly half of the people said IPTV will replace the traditional TV commercial broadcasts in future.

Despite the growing popularity of IPTV service in UK, it was found that nearly half of the people who watch on-demand TV over broadband spend much less time watching TV programmes than those who watch commercial broadcasts like ITV while 41 percent of the viewers spend the same amount of time.

As far as the contents that attract the viewers are concerned, movies top the list as 83 percent of them would like to take IPTV service for watching their favourite movies, 41 percent of them for TV shows and only 39 percent for contents related to sports.

As on-demand TV over broadband enabled the users to get access to videos instantly, half of the UK adults find downloading movies from internet on rent  much easier option than going to video rental store.

Neal McCleave, the MD of media services for Tiscali UK said:

"There is obviously a big demand already among British consumers for the freedom and choice IPTV will give them, even if they don't know the jargon yet. Conventional broadcasters should heed the warning and will need to adapt significantly in the coming years to retain their market share.”

"The good news for consumers is that with all the extra choice and freedom, we're not all going to become couch potatoes. While the growing adoption of IPTV may mean we watch less TV overall, the time we spend in front of the box will be of a higher quality."
