Broadband TV (IPTV) Services in Europe see phenomenal growth
Broadband TV subscriptions are on rise according to the report from DSL Forum which is based on the statistics and research provided by Point-Topic. According to the report, broadband TV takeup has nearly doubled (179%) during the last six months. The report also confirms that the majority of the broadband connections are ADSL based as 66 percent of broadband services are using this technology. Currently, more than 8 million users on the globe have combined IPTV services with their basic broadband packages. The figures also show that, in Asia Pacific, which is the most developed broadband region of all, has more than a quarter of total IPTV watchers (2,176,000) while North America has 1,069,000 broadband TV viewers by the end of June, 2007. In comparison, Europe is reported to have the highest number of IPTV subscriptions as well as the highest year-on-year growth in broadband TV viewership. As per report, there are nearly five million IPTV viewers in Europe showing more than 300 percent growth during the last 12 months. In the UK, there are triple play providers like Virgin Media, Tiscali, BSkyB and BT who are offering digital TV services using the internet platform. The phenomenal growth in IPTV services and its growing popularity has already raised the issues of traffic congestion which is likely to hit the speeds drastically. Already, many leading UK broadband providers have started shaping the traffic on their lines depending on the capacities of their servers. This scenario has already made the ISP to reassess the performance of their networks which require upgradation in terms of quality and technology.
