Ofcom Encouraged by Three To Hasten Options of Switching Providers

Saturday, February 11th 2012

Mobile providers Three has urged Ofcom to pass on the proposition for easy enabling of switching telephone exchanges and broadband providers to mobile phone users also.

The telecom regulator had only just then put forth a proposition where a new provider of broadband or telecommunications would have to take the responsibility of carrying out the process of the switch for the consumers. This would also include transferring the services from the old provider. This proposal has been put forth by Ofcom so that users will not have any trouble when they make the change over. Usually during a switch users are put to a lot of trouble when they do not have broadband or telephone connectivity for some days.

As of now the regulator is only considering making it more simple for broadband and telephone line users, but their prospective plans would also include the mobile phone users. It was in this context that a Three representative urged the regulatory authority to hasten the procedure. He stated that the proposal Ofcom put forward to get a new provider was great news for the broadband users, but it was quite another picture for the mobile users. It has been five years since the regulator has been trying to introduce something like this for mobile consumers, but the mobile customers were still in the same rut having to obtain consent from their provider to retain the same mobile number after the switch. The representative said that the fervently prayed that Ofcom would make this service available to the mobile customers treating it as a very urgent matter.

BOB Warner, the panel Chair of the Communications Consumer panel greeted the regulator’s proposals, but simultaneously requested the mobile providers to put their heads together with Ofcom to create a single switching procedure for all types pf communication services. This was what would give the consumers the assurance to switch packages as a consequence of the complications involved.

Adam Scorer, Director of Policy at Consumer Focus said that he looked forward to the fact that these steps would make more number of people make the switch to better and more suitable deals. He commented that Ofcom should also look into the switching bundles like broadband mobile and TV because they too are beginning to get extremely popular among clients, but that they should have rates that would be less that the broadband rates.

In the April of the previous year Ofcom had set up rules where the operators had to provide a porting Authorisation Code within a matter of just two hours as printed matter or a instantly offer a message over the telephone to a consumer who wanted to leave their services.
