UK Soars to Greater Heights as a Broadband Nation

According to Top Ten Broadband, a UK based website that dedicates itself to the broadband segment, UK has emerged as the sixth largest broadband nation in the world. They substantiate this conclusion with the significant fact that over the past year, UK has witnessed the surge of a million fresh broadband customers signing up. The pertinent study was carried out by an agency called Point Topic.

Broadband Forum's newly published figures reveal that at the end of 2009 first quarter, the broadband population in the country stood at 17.7 million. This according to the Forum has been a considerable rise from the 16.3 million population in the same time, the previous year. This increase has proved to be beneficial for the for the nation's promotion to the slot of world's sixth largest broadband nation, although behind France who overtook it with a boost of 18 million online population.

The researcher, Point Topic also mentioned that western Europe was one of the largest broadband market in the world with IPTV services regardsd as the catalyst for growth across the continent. The study revealed that two thirds of the 429.2 million total broadband lines in the world, were DSL lines. This accounts to 64.6 percent in other words.

The study also revealed the fact that around 20 percent of the total connections across the world were cable broadband connections, as fibre optic and mobile broadband connections accounted to 12.4 and 1.3 percent respectively.
