The end of fixed line broadband in Germany in the offing

Tuesday, August 23rd 2011

Vodafone is switching over from fixed line DSL broadband to Long Term Evolution (LTE) after they found out that they are wasting a huge amount as rental to Deutsche Telekom through Local Loop Unbundling (LLU). Obviously other providers will follow the footstep of Vodafone. That will be the end of landline broadband in Germany. Though next generation (4G) broadband solution is considered to be a ‘mobile broadband’ invention, it can work well with fixed line system also. 50 Mbps speed can be attained, which will match the fixed line systems. Vodafone is sure of saving around GBP 438 million a year by switching over to LTE. But most of the UK companies are not likely to follow Vodafone, because of the inability to do so due to the non-availability of the spectrum necessary for the purpose. However it is hoped that the spectrum will be made available and that the LTE services will be available by the beginning of 2014.
