Plymouth gets faster broadband

Saturday, April 3rd 2010

According to BT, over 80% of homes and businesses in Plymouth presently have access to high-speed broadband. The communications giant has recently installed new equipment in the area, as a result of which over 60,000 lines across Plymouth can now carry broadband of greater speeds. BT says that this investment has made speeds of  up to 24 Mb/s possible for the residents of Plymouth using which they can enjoy video-on-demand, super-fast gaming and many more facilities.

However, BT's present speeds are nowhere near the proposed speeds of Digital Plymouth, an initiative of the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce. Digital Plymouth is aiming at delivering hyperfast broadband using fibre-optic cables.

BT is reportedly looking at spreading it's high speed broadband services to nearly 75% of homes and offices in the country by the spring of 2011. According to Jon Reynolds, the South West regional director of BT, their faster broadband services that offers numerous improvements and opportunities to the people is a “major milestone for Plymouth.”
