Legislation foresee Fibre Broadband Roll-Out across UK

Saturday, June 12th 2010

Jeremy Hunt, UK Culture Secretary has disclosed the ideas to speed up the process of preparing for the country wide broadband. The UK Government has programs to introduce a legislation that can force water, gas and electrical suppliers to allow them to access the underground duct with ISPs so that a high speed broadband network could be laid across the UK.

CEO of the Broadband Stakeholders Group(BSG), Anthony Walker has accepted  the plans of the new government, but said that the use of the legislation must be taken only as a final resort. BT has welcomed the program and is already working with the Welsh assembly for the digital connection in Wales. Broadband connection in rural areas is an extremely expensive operation and according to BT the costs can be lowered if the underground ducts are shared.

According to the Hunt and industry leaders, UK is currently suffering from massive digital divide. And some experts say that the ISPs(Internet Service Providers) must start working together to connect every household in the UK with the high speed broadband service.
