High Broadband Costs Let UK Slip Behind On Broadband Services

A recent report reveals that the UK is lagging behind some other European nations, in its consumption of information and communications technology. This fact was disclosed after a close study of 154 countries. The main reason behind the UK's trailing behind was the comparatively high prices charged by the ISPs for service access.

Graph Of Europe's Country-Wise Internet UsageThe study, which also ventured into other subjects such as computer using households, mobile and fixed phones, number of internet users, levels of literacy, etc found that Brtain was the tenth most active ICT user in the world, though the prices were relatively high. The study reveals that a direct relation was found between the usage of ICT and the price tags of the service packages. This was particularly apparent in the internet broadband and mobile telephony segments.

There are a number of experts who post this reason behind Stephen Carter's average up to 2Mbps service highlighted, Digital Britain programme. One amongst the lot is Hartwig Tauber, the director general of the European Fibre-to-the-Home Council, who thinks that it was a good omen that Ofcom has recognised the need of the moment and acted accordingly by liberalising its approach towards super-fast broadband investors.

However, Tauber said that he was disappointed that Britain failed to make the top hundred nations with fibre-to-the-home. He added that when Openreach was launched by BT, there was a wide anticipation in Europe that the UK was going ahead on the next-generation networks installation, though that did not happen, for it seemed that the country had been pre-occupied with 2Mbps.
