Plusnet slapped by ASA for Illegible Small Print Ad

Thursday, January 27th 2011

It has been reported that a complaint made against one of the popular fixed-line broadband suppliers operating in the United Kingdom, Plusnet UK, was upheld by the advertisement regulator of the country last day.

The complaint against the internet service provider, upheld by the Advetising Standards Authority (ASA) was filed by a member of the general public. The complaint read that the small print at the footer of a bus poster advertisement for Plusnet UK going 'the cheapest Plusnet Value broadband service at GBP 6.49 a month' was illegible.

Plusnet UK, on a note of disagreement with the complaint stated that the small print on the poster was of 132 point size, which was legible according to the internet service provider's claims.

However, the advertising watchdog noted in its conclusion that a minimum point size for the small print or text in posters, was not specified by the Code. It added that however, the small print on the posters needs to be vividly visible to a normally sighted individual reading that from a reasonable distance at a reasonable pace.

The UK ASA pointed out their considering the fact that the quoted price of GBP 6.49, for not being available to all - this was the content of the small print at the bottom - should have been made clearer.

The advertising watchdog of the United Kingdom concluded that the poster was misleading for the reason that the small-print explaining the 'not available to all' part od the advertisement was illegible.
