Orange to switch on to Broadband TV Network
It has been reported that Orange, one of the leading mobile broadband providers operating in the United Kingdom has revived a long-held ambition of its, which is to offer television services over its broadband internet network. It is interesting that this significant proposal from the UK ISP comes after its outsourcing its fixed-line broadband internet network to fixed-line broadband giant of the United Kingdom, BT in the previous month.
It is believed that this outsourcing contract would give the mobile broadband provider that enjoys access to thirty million customers following a merger with the UK arm of T-Mobile in March, the chance to piggyback on a more advanced network of BT that extends its service to across the country.
The deal between Orange and BT in the United Kingdom means that a plan which was slated originally for late 2007, to offer television services over the broadband internet network firmly returns to the agenda. Nonetheless, an imminent launch is not likely to happen.
An entry into the television over broadband frame means that Orange UK would compete in a better way with the likes of BSkyB, BT and Virgin Media in bundling a number of services into a single package.
It is also worth mentioning here that at present, the only telecommunications firm to showcase quadplay packages with broadband, mobile, fixed-line phone and TV on a single bill is Virgin Media.
