BT has stated that its Chairman Sir Mike Rake will be replaced by Jan du Plessis, who will join the Board on 1st June as a non executive director and with effect from 1at November will become Chairman. Jan du Plessis has held a number of other senior non-executive roles prior to his appointment as Chairman of Rio Tinto, his present role. Last year, Sir Mike Rake was expected to leave but then agreed to stay on until September this year, thus becoming BT's longest serving board member.

BT cites seasons for their choice as, Jan has credibility with key stakeholders and has "deep experience" of leading prominent organisations. His appointment comes at a testing time when negotiations with Ofcom are undergoing regarding the future of Openreach.

Sir Mike Rake said he was glad Jan has been chosen to succeed him. BT has made huge progress and remains on track, giving him great confidence in its future. Jan du Plessis said he is honoured to become chairman of BT, a great British company, at a point important for the company and he looks forward to work with Gavin and his team to support the digital future of Britain.
