Universal Britain Proposal to be Investigated by MPs Committee

Reports say that an invesigation will be carried out on the 2Mbps universal broadband service commitment proposed in the Digital Britain report, and the levy of 50p on phone lines. The inquiry into the matter will be launched by the Commons Business and Enterprise Committee, which would be an all party committee comprising of Members of Parliament.

The MPs will be holding a series of hearings after acquiring written evidence from the parties interested. Which they have already called for. Subsequently, they will be reaching conclusions to publish a report based on the acquired substantiations. It is expected that the all party committee will chllenge the reason in the government's 50p levy proposal in its Digital Britain report with a view to fund the enhancement of copper lines, apart from scutinising the ambition behind 2Mbps broadband for all promise by 2012.

An All Party MPs' Committee to Invesigate Broadband for All Plan-Broadband SuppliersCommittee will give priority to the investigation into the real mindset of the industry regarding the practicability in realising the broadband for all plan in the United Kingdom. It would also ponder over the question whether the presently delivered speeds of the ISPs were proportional to their promises.

Meanwhile, the 2Mbps broadband for all UK households proposal in the Digital Britain report has been criticised by numerous broadband experts in the country and even from outside Britain. They have based their criticism on the fact that many countries already are well ahead of the 2Mbps speed, with some even aiming at something phenominal like 100Mbps.
