Nokia Siemens Upgrade O2 Mobile Broadband Networks For Doubling Capacity

Friday, June 11th 2010

Broadband supplier O2, seems to be on an "easing network usage" spree. First, they got Nokia Siemens Networks to upgrade their network for increasing its capacity. Second, they are remodelling their data plans to cut out unlimited usage. Heavy users of the network are now going to be charged heavily as well.

Network congestions have increased as demand for mobile internet has increased. A majority of the mobile network traffic is attributed to iPhone users. There are other smartphone and netbook users who clog the network as well. According to O2, 97% of their customers use less than 500MB per month. However, the remaining 3% are heavy users (which amounts to 150,000 users), and take up 30% of their network's capacity.

Nokia Siemens Networks have reportedly analysed the O2's network and its usage thoroughly and have set up 6-sector antennas on the O2 cell towers. Earlier there were only 3 sectors. To understand the concept of sectors, you should check out the explanation in IntoMobile.com. The capacity of the network is thus said to have doubled, theoretically. And O2 customers will supposedly be enjoying faster internet access, downloading and even better signal strengths.
