The Guardian Flays the UK Government, Advises WiMAX Employment
One of the leading newspapers in the United Kingdom, The Guardian has criticised the government recently, for the latter's ineptness shown up regarding the completion of its 2Mbps broadband for all promise made in the Digital Britain report released in June. Alongside, the popular daily has also advised the government to try the WiMAX mobile broadband technology, which it believed would help bring internet access across the UK, by bridging the gaps left over by the fixed line broadband rollout. Apart for the newspaper, a number of experts in the broadband industry have also expressed their feeling of uncertainty over the successful implementation of the universal broadband plan, which is all about providing every household in the UK, a 2Mbps broadband connection by 2012. It is also not a secret today that most of the internet service providers in the country are reluctant in committing to a comprehensive rural broadband service. The apprehension may be mainly caused by financial restraint.
According to The Guardian, to increase broadband services as well as to cover more rural areas in the country, one pragmatic step was to fit the country's BT exchanges with WiMAX transmitters. The newspaper explains further that by taking this measure, a five mile diameter area should get wireless broadband speeds between 4Mbps and 6Mbps. The daily added that it was also predictable that at some juncture in the near future, most of the laptops and PCs would be designed with embedded WiMAX technology.
