Ofcom, the telecommunications regulator of the United Kingdom looks set to auction off the 2010 to 2025MHz radio spectrum by means of competitive tender after identifying the pressure from the various telecommunications providers operating n the United Kingdom.

According to reports, Ofcom is considering the permanent allocation of the spectrum to PMSE (programme making and special events) for the use of wireless cameras and broadcasters.

However, the consultation response and evidence that had come from Germany seems to have convinced the watchdog that there was commercial value in the spectrum that remains unused at present.

The confidential as well as seven open feedbacks to its consultation of 2010 was received by Ofcom. In those, Ericsson and BT noted that despite demand for the spectrum remaining muted currrently, a broadband usage growth coule change it more enticing in the future.

Meanwhile, both JFMG (band manager) and the BBC argued that the band should be assigned to the Programme Making and Special Events. The sale of the 2010 MHz spectrum of Germany to Telefonica Germany last year that raised GBP 4.8 million was also taken into account by Ofcom.
