EE launches new 4G mobile broadband capable of average 90Mbps

Saturday, November 1st 2014

After trials, UK's biggest mobile operator EE has launched the next generation 4G+ (LTE Advanced) service in London. Theoretically this upgraded mobile network on 4G+ can deliver wireless internet download speeds of up to 300Mbps and they also claim an average speed of up to 90Mbps can be delivered to users.

On trial around the area of Tech City in East London, the LTE-A has been switched on now (from 30 October) to cover another 150 sites around London, which includes Kensington, Westminster, Soho, Southbank, Old Street and Shoreditch. In the next few months a further 300 more sites are expected to join in the coverage. Eventually EE's upgrade will be covering the whole of London by the June of next year, which also includes the rollout over Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham. EE has also separately switched on its vanilla 4G network, thus going live in the following places- Winterbourne, Warwick, Warminster, Waltham Cross, Blaydon, Biggleswade, Banbury, Cookstown, Catterick Garrison, Greenock, Garforth, Tring, Penicuik, Oxted, Maltby, Limavady, Holmfirth, Alexandria and Ystrad Mynach.

EE is anticipated to push up their network speeds (on LTE-A 4G+) right up to 400 Mbps in the near future. If EE could offer better data allowances, more customers can make full use of this new mobile technology. But a lot depends on also signal strength and shared capacity to actually receive the average speeds of up to 90Mbps that's claimed. Again, users must have compatible devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S5 or Note 4, or Samsung Alpha, fed on a Corporate 4GEE or 4GEE Extra plan. The new network delivers these faster speeds because of the technology's Carrier Aggregation mode, that allows the mobile network operator to combine the 20 MHz on their present 1,800 MHz band and 20MHz on their currently acquired 2.6GHz band of the radio spectrum.
