1 Mbps is the Average Mobile Broadband Speed in the UK
This virtually cannot be worse, as the broadband provider that delivered the fastest actual speed was Vodafone at 1.3 Mbps; a pathetic 18 percent of its propagandised top speed of 7.2 Mbps. This finding of the study is all the more significant as it comes in the wake of an announcement by Vodafone that it had started upgrading a section of its network to an unbelievable 7.2Mbps theoretical maximum. However, more surprising was the fact that T-Mobile that comes with testimony of YouGov for the fastest mobile broadband supplier in the United Kingdom, according to the survey only delivered an average speed of 0.9Mbps in real, which is just 20 per cent of its advertised access speeds. According to the study, 3UK accounted for the highest percentage of speed advertised, with its customers getting an average speed of 1.2Mbps that is around 30 percent of the 3.6Mbps advertised speed. The survey that explicitly revealed that the advertised mobile broadband speeds by the companies were totally misleading, was carried out between March 1 and August 31. The fresh survey details were published by a pro-broadband website – The Broadband Choices.
A fresh research carried out on 3342 mobile broadband connections showed that while the average access speeds advertised by various mobile broadband providers in the country were 4.5Mbps, the average speeds experienced were 1.1Mbps. This also reveals a grim fact that the mobile broadband suppliers were only delivering a quarter of the speeds advertised by them.
