Wiltshire MP calls on ISPs to Filter Porn Sites by Age

Claire Perry, the Conservative MP for Wiltshire has called on the internet service providers operating in the United Kingdom to restrict universal access to websites containing pornographic material. This according to the MP could be done by implementing a choice system for accessing such content, which requires verification that the consumer was above the age of 18.

This move by Perry follows a recent study, which revealed that one in every three children aged under ten in the United Kingdom hav viewed pornographic material on the internet. The study further reported that 4 in every 5 children aged between 14 and 16 admitted to accessing explicit footage and images regularly on their household computers.

Perry said that she knew as a mother of three children how difficult it was to keep them from seeing inappropriate content over the internet. She asked why the internet needed to be different as the authorities have successfully regulated cinema screens, TC channels, newsagent shelves and high street hoardings in the United Kingdom to restrict children from accessing inappropriate pictures.

Perry maintained the view that the internet service providers operating in the United Kingdom needed to share the responsibility to keep the children safe, for which she was demanding the UK broadband providers to engage an opt in system that used age-verification for providing access to pornographic content.

However, the proposals forwarded by the Wiltshire MP somewhat ignored the fact that many broadband providers were already offering paretal control features, besides a number of them imposing a similar default restriction that asked credit card verification to disable. There is also another alternative that was all about moving the computers to an areas of their home where parents could supervise the children.
