Wikipedia Joins Amazon to Reject Phorm Technology
Wikipedia has recently made known its decision to reject the advertising technology of Phorm, a digital technology development and support company. Earlier, the Phorm technology was declined by Amazon, the popular international online store. Amazon had also mentioned that it would not allow Phorm to access its internet pages to gather information about internet users.
The Wikimedia Foundation, who own Wikipedia, have as well requested that their domain on the internet should not be scanned by the Phorm Website system. Phorm works with some of the most popular ISPs to track the internet usage of their customers, to generate data that can be used for advertising purposes.
A representative of the Wikimedia Foundation has stated in one of his blogs, that allowing Phorm to monitor and collect information about customers visiting their websites is a violation of their privacy. The Webwise technology designed by Phorm, has even received a negative response from advocates of privacy, though the company claims that this technology is completely anonymous.
Despite opposition from other websites, the Minister for Communications, Technology & Broadcasting of the UK, Lord Stephen Carter has approved Phorm's services, that are yet to be launched. Even the UK telecom regulator Ofcom, have agreed to Phorm's plans.
