Welsh Government aims to take the country to the forefront of the digital world
It is common practice to exclude certain regions from superfast rollout plans by private operators as they consider these regions as ‘hard spots’ – commercially not viable areas. This time the Welsh communities are going to benefit from state funding. The Welsh Government has decided to subsidise roll out of next generation broadband to identified locations across the country. These locations would be provided with broadband speeds of at least 30 Mbps. The Welsh Government wants to provide faster broadband to all households and businesses throughout Wales by 2015. It is taking steps to instruct private operators not to neglect commercially not viable areas. Two or more operators are covering south and north-east Wales whereas no broadband provider is coming forward to cover the whole country including the “hard to reach” areas. For this purpose, a number of maps showing details of places currently have broadband service have been published by the Government. In order to help the policy makers, the Government has directed the private sector to inform the Government about the areas where the investment in super-fast broadband has already been made and the regions where they are going to rollout super-fast broadband in the coming 3 years. Private operators are directed to submit their reports before 23rd February 2012 so that the Welsh Ministers would be able to demarcate the regions where the deployment of the superfast broadband is to be concentrated. Edwina Hart, Business Minister said that Government’s intervention in the deployment plans will be necessary for achieving the goal of the Welsh Government. She continued that the intervention is in the interest of the community at large. The Government has committed to provide next generation broadband to the whole of Wales by 2015 and the investment in the competitive digital infrastructure would take the country to the forefront of the digital world. She added that a healthy and strong super-fast broadband access is a must for businesses and households to enable them to compete in the competitive markets. The UK Government was kind enough to allot 56.9 million Pounds last July for the Welsh broadband services and the Welsh Government was given a free hand to decide on the way to spend it. This funding was allotted over and above the 10 million Packages announced by the Chancellor George Osborne to improve the broadband speeds in Pwllheli and other surrounding areas.
