UK Not Among The Top For Broadband Speed

Tuesday, April 27th 2010

Akamai, the digital backbone of the world wide web, recently made a study about global broadband speeds. Oxford was one among the top 5 cities, for speediest broadband services. The other cities in the UK, that made it among the top 100, were Cambridge, Southampton and Bristol. However, London did not feature in this list.

In Oxford, the average broadband speed recorded was 14.1Mbps. There are however questions being raised about the Oxford result. The special high speed university connection is supposed to have had a hand in boosting up the test speeds.

Berkeley, in California, had the fastest internet speed recorded, with an overall data transfer rate of 18.3Mbps.

The average speed for the whole of UK was calculated to be 3.7Mbps. BCS reports that UK is placed way behind other developed countries, in terms of broadband speed.
