UK Govt details its 2Mbps Universal Broadband Plans

The government of the United Kingdom has detailed its plan to deliver 2 Mbps universal broadband internet access in the United Kingdom and to emerge as the best superfast broadband internet network in Europe by the year 2015.

The culture, media and sport department has detailed its approach to providing across the United Kingdom, better broadband services, as part of SRPs (structural reform plans), announced by the Prime Minister David Cameron.

Reports had earlier cited the commitment of the government to improving the broadband services of the United Kingdom.

Jeremy Hunt, the Culture minister has stated while speaking in the House of Commons that they were committed to having Europe's fastes superfast broadband internet network by the end of the current parliament. He added that they were doing all things possible to stimulate private investment in the country's broadband internet network.

Hunt also said that the government has laid out a timetable to achieve the goal that included examining barriers for fresh providers in fibre optic broadband networks, and if required it would by 2010 November, set out a strategy, which would effectuate a level playing field for both existing firms as well as freh competition.

Three milestones for the delivery of broadband services have been listed by the SRP of DCMS, which were the completion of its consultation on the infrastruycture's deregulation for facilitating superfast broadband by Nov 2010, publishing a reportby September 2011 on regultory measures' impact to enable the simultaneous launch of superfast broadband in highly populated as well as remote areas, and to make sure that BT and other providers allowed others t use their assets to deliver next generation broadband.
