The UK lowly placed with respect to broadband connection speeds
The UK’s dream of becoming the fastest broadband nation in the Europe is in doldrums.
As per reports from Akamai, the UK, with an average download speed of 5.1 Mbps, ranks a poor 17th with reference to the broadband speed in the European continent. The Netherlands tops the table with a speed of 8.5 Mbps.
Surprisingly no English city finds a place among the 100 cities worldwide with the fastest connection speeds. Taegu in South Korea takes the number one spot with an average speed of 21.5 Mbps.
Among the UK cities, Bradford has the highest speed of 6.7 Mbps and is ranked 125th in the world. Incidentally the speed in London is only 4Mbps.
All these clearly show that the UK is in no position to adhere to the promise it had given earlier that the best and fastest broadband in Europe will be made available in the UK by 2015, when 90% of the population will have access to 100 Mbps speed.
David Belson of Akamai said that not only UK but certain other countries in the continent also will have to do much if they intend to bring the benefit of the latest communication technology to the people. Apart from the Government fund, private sector investment, and funding from the county councils will be necessary to meet the initiative. Even if the fund is made available, the project execution is a real challenge.
