Saturday, December 3rd 2011

The UK is ranked the world’s 37th fastest with an average download speed of 11.36Mbps. The country is still far behind many of its European competitors regarding broadband speeds provided to households, reported Net Index. Researches showed that with a normal resident of Britain who subscribes for broadband being provided download speeds of 11.36Mbps, the UK has been ranked the 37th in the world. In comparison Lithuania ranked first with an average speed of 31.7Mbps, and then came South Korea with 29.73Mbps and Latvia with 26.67 Mbps download speeds. The top ten ranks were predominantly European countries, with Sweden with 26.01Mbps and Romania with 26.78Mbps making up the first five, followed by Netherlands, Estonia, Bulgaria and Switzerland ranking 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. Singapore with an average speed of 18.34Mbps grabbed the 10th position. A minimum of 100,000 unique IP addresses were necessary if a country was to be listed within the first ten ranks. Though south-eastern countries like Singapore and South Korea seems to do well as far as download speeds were concerned, the UK government was more anxious that their West-European counterparts like France and Germany and also the US fared better than the UK. The Net Index found that when rated on a regional level Beverley in the East Riding or Yorkshire had the quickest average broadband speed with 38.21Mbps in the country, which was considerably faster than Mirfield that was placed 2nd with a speed of 22.98Mbps. Only a 1,000 unique IP addresses were needed to be incorporated into this list. When taking the bigger towns and cities into consideration, Grimsby with 18.77Mbps speed came 9th in the UK, with Stockport and Stafford being placed 34th and 35th with respective speeds of 17.13Mbps and 11.11Mbps. None of the cities like London, Manchester, Liverpool or Birmingham made it to the top 50 places on the list. Nevertheless some of the largest cities in the country did better regarding total IP addresses, with London topping the list with over 2.8 million addresses. Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sheffield followed in that order and Leeds, Bristol, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Nottingham rounding off the first ten on the list.
