The government criticized for poor connectivity in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland

It is a pity that even now some of the ‘County Tyrone’ residents are without broadband access. According to Anthony McGonnell of the ‘Dungannon Borough Council’, many places in the counties are struggling due to the non-availability of broadband access. There are lots of complaints from the affected residents everyday, especially from Killeeshill and Clogher Valley. But according to Ofcom, the regulator, 97% of the North Ireland County is enjoying superfast broadband, far ahead of the national average of 58%. McGonnell does not agree. He stated that the quality of internet service in his constituency is extremely poor. It is substantially affecting the economy of the place. The residents and businesses at long distances from the exchanges at Pomeroy, Ballygawley and Donaghmore are the most affected. In fact, of recent, the situation has become worse. The student community is also badly affected. The students are unable to download projects or send emails concerning the homework. They are forced to travel long distances to their friends with proper broadband access for their requirements. This is causing undue strain on them apart from wasting time and money. The business concerns are unable to take on the competitors with fast broadband facility. McGonnell said that this is a clear indication of the digital divide which should not be allowed to develop. But nothing has been done to settle the matter. He is alarmed that the promises by the authorities are not being put into effect.
