Telecom New Zealand LogoTelecom New Zealand has revealed its intent to be a major player in the realisation of an ultra  fast mobile broadband plan envisaged by the government. The government is planning to invest $ 1.5 billion in this project. The plan that was all about providing superfast broadband over the next ten years, to 75 percent of the country was announced by the government in March. An investment firm called Crown Fibre Investment Company was handed over the contract of the rollout.

Telecom NZ come into the frame on Tuesday saying it had provided a couple of proposals based on the delivery of the new technology, for the government's consideration. The first proposal was all about co-ordinating the government's investment with the existing as well as the upcoming fibre network of the Telecom NZ to extend its optic fibre service.

The second proposal referred to the creation of a national network of pipes to shelter the CFIC owned optic fibre cables that can be accessed by all internet service providers. The proposals of the Telecom NZ also mentions the expansion of the 75 percent optic fibre coverage area to places such as Gore, Rangiora, Greymouth, Waiheke and Queenstown that were missed by the government in their original plan.

Telecom's proposals can be valued by its existing fibre optic cable assets of 23,500 km in the ground. According to Paull Reynolds, the CEO of Telecom NZ, fibre can be delivered to more New Zealanders once the government's investment plan of $ 1.5 billion is integrated with the existing plans of Telecom.
