Super-fast broadband network by Google
The cables are constituted of thin glass fibers of thickness as minute as that of the human hair. Cable network forms a part of the broadband wire mesh and provide very high speeds, says Kevin Lo of Google Access.
Google has plans to build fiber infrastructure and then connect fiber to premises across Kansas City.
Google wants to test the high speed broadband network for supporting graphically intensive programs, gaming applications etc. In fact, ‘YouTube’, the video sharing service of Google, is in need of high speed to produce more video views and serve more advertisements.
Google’s fiber group has requested the Federal Communications Commission for testing of a residential gateway complete with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
While most of the Wi-Fi routers are capable of handling data at 600 Mbps, Google is intending to test hardware of I Gbps data speeds.
Google’s interest is to test Bluetooth and Wi-Fi protocols and performance, inclusive of synchronization of Wi-Fi channels between devices, within an integrated access point, which form a part of the fiber gateway. Such a testing will expose engineering complexity and reliability.
The testing is not for determining the radio frequency (RF) characteristics of the equipment but to arrive at the output and stability of the home network supporting the network.
While building Google Fiber, new technologies are tested and adopted, ultimately bringing higher speeds for the benefit of the users throughout the world.
Google refused to give further details.
In the meantime, the service provider Sky has planned to provide fiber broadband to its customers from April this year. Sky had already informed that its copper broadband service will be available for 88% of the UK by December 2013.
Using BT’s fiber, Sky will provide speeds of 40 Mbps. In comparison, Virgin Media boasts of 100 mbps speeds for its customers.
30% of the UK population will be able to opt for ‘Broadband Unlimited Fiber package’ of Sky by paying a GBP 32.50 per month inclusive of the GBP 12.50 line rental.
