Stranraer of Scotland to benefit from BT’s broadband initiative

According to BT, the broadband service provider, Stranraer, one of the 47 towns in Scotland, with 186,000 premises is included in its plan for next generation broadband. About 5,800 premises will be catered with faster broadband through copper lines before the next summer.

Download speeds of 20 Megabits per second will be attained. Incidentally the current speed available in the UK homes and businesses is only 10 Megabits per second.

Brendan Dick of BT Scotland remarked that the earlier plan was to provide super fast fiber optic broadband to 695,000 homes and commercial concerns by 2012 end. Apart from that the plan is to take up the work on the copper lines as well. BT’s work is progressing fast.

Duncan Nisbet, the director for ‘South of Scotland Next Generation Broadband Project’ remarked that the task is to meet the broadband needs of the entire South Scotland latest by 2020. Procurement is expected during the next year.

BT’s interest to upgrade three exchanges in South Scotland will be extremely beneficial to the residents of Hawick, Selkrik and Stranraer. It will pave the way to boost the economy of the place. The business concerns will be better placed to compete in the world market. It will help the youth for online studies, choosing of careers, search for jobs etc.

BT is already on the process of upgrading of fiber-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) exchanges in places like Galashiels, Innerleithen. Peebles, Dumfries etc.
