South Yorkshire Experiences Fibre Broadband Network

The launch of a superfast fibre optic broadband internet network of the next generation calibre across South Yorkshire has been confirmed by Digital Region.

 

Digital Region is a body that consists of Yorkshire Forward, an agency for development and a number of local councils. The organisation had teamed with Thales UK to create the fibre optic broadband network, which has been availed to ninety seven per cent of businesses and homes in the region.

 

It is also significant that the next generation superfast fibre optic broadband technology that shrouds South Yorkshire at present guarantees 25Mbps download speeds. Reports suggest that this was achieved through a funding of over GBP 90 million.

 

“Truly Groundbreaking”, this was the description that was given to the scheme in his own words by Digital Region's chief executive officer, David Holt. He added that the fibre broadband network would have an array of benefits such as providing a range of opportunities and boosting inward investment for public sector organisations, local residents and businesses.

 

The credit for the the first local authority to launch a fibre broadband network of open access type in England had been claimed by Gateshead Council lately.

 

Baltic Business Quarter in the town is currently providing the technology that was launched as part of a deal signed with Alcatel-Lucent.
