Rural France to Benefit from Tooway Satellite Broadband

Monday, December 7th 2009

It has been reported that SFR, a telecoms firm based in France has chosen the satellite broadband service provider Tooway to supply internet access in the rural areas of France, which were located far away from telephone exchanges.

France too much like the United Kingdom has been pestered by the broadband notspot problem that makes it impossible for them to provide the broadband internet customers living in more remote areas of the country with reasonably fast broadband services. To rub salt on their wounds, the laying of fibre optic cables to enable superfast fibre broadband service was also not viable commercially. This was reported by TechWatch.

On the other hand, in the United Kingdom the government is seriously considering various technologies such as community-based WiFi wireless broadband networking and satellite broadband services to tackle the issue. Nevertheless, now France is expected to come into a position to offer its rural internet customers with satellite broadband services rolled out by SFR.

It is understood that initially the satellite broadband services would be delivered through the Hot Bird 6 satellite of Eutelsat. This is further expected to be optimized with the launch of the KA SAT next generation satellites towards the end of 2010.

Meanwhile, the government of the United Kingdom has pledged to provide every home in the country with a 2Mbps fast broadband connection by 2012.
